Learning to Speak, Learning to Lead: Speak Up with Confidence Workshop at JK Montessorie British School

On 3rd June 2024, JK Arts Foundation conducted the Speak Up with Confidence Workshop at JK Montessorie British School, Talab Tillo, Jammu, engaging 50 students in a dynamic writing and speaking-focused learning experience. While students regularly engage with reading and writing in classrooms, many lack opportunities to express their own ideas aloud in a supportive environment. This workshop was designed to help children discover the power of their voice and build confidence in communicating their thoughts clearly and creatively.
The session began with interactive warm-up activities that encouraged students to introduce themselves, share simple opinions, and listen actively to one another. Facilitators emphasized that communication is not about speaking perfectly, but about expressing honestly. Students then participated in guided writing exercises where they responded to age-appropriate prompts such as describing a memorable moment, imagining their dream world, or writing a short message to their future selves. These written reflections later became the foundation for short oral presentations.
As the workshop progressed, a visible transformation took place. Students who were initially hesitant to speak in front of their peers gradually began raising their hands and volunteering to share their work. Facilitators observed increased eye contact, clearer articulation, and growing self-assurance among participants. Peers listened attentively and responded with applause and encouragement, creating a safe and nurturing atmosphere.
Teachers shared that such experiences play a crucial role in developing both language skills and self-belief. One teacher reflected, “When children are given space to speak without fear of judgment, they surprise us with their ideas and confidence.” The workshop also helped teachers gain deeper insight into students’ personalities, interests, and emotional worlds through their writing and spoken words.
Beyond communication skills, the workshop nurtured empathy and respect. Students learned to listen to diverse perspectives, appreciate different ways of thinking, and offer positive feedback. These are foundational competencies for collaboration and leadership in the 21st century.
This initiative aligns with JK Arts Foundation’s mission to integrate creative and expressive learning into mainstream education. By combining writing and speaking with arts-based pedagogy, JKAF supports holistic development—bridging academic learning with emotional intelligence and confidence-building.
The workshop concluded with proud smiles and a renewed sense of belief among students in their own voices. At JK Arts Foundation, we believe that when children learn to speak with confidence, they also learn to lead with purpose.
