Floating Gardens of Dal Lake: Kashmir’s Ingenious Agricultural Heritage

Dal Lake is usually encountered through images of colourful shikaras, intricately carved houseboats, lotus blossoms and the mountains surrounding Srinagar. Yet beyond this familiar landscape lies one of the lake’s most remarkable cultural traditions: its floating gardens. Known locally as Raad, these cultivated patches represent an extraordinary adaptation to a water-dominated environment. Farmers learned to transform aquatic vegetation, organic matter and lake sediment into productive growing spaces, creating an agricultural landscape that appears to float upon the water. Today, the gardens remain an important part of Dal Lake’s cultural ecology and a striking example of traditional environmental knowledge.
A Landscape Shaped by Water
Dal Lake is not simply a scenic water body; it is a complex living landscape in which human settlements, agriculture, fishing, tourism and natural ecosystems have developed alongside one another. Located in Srinagar, the lake is part of a larger wetland environment and is divided into interconnected basins. Its margins and interior contain channels, marshes, inhabited islands, lotus fields and cultivated areas.
For communities living within and around this landscape, water has never been merely an obstacle separating one piece of land from another. It has functioned as a route of transportation, a source of food and livelihood, and even as the foundation upon which agricultural land could be created.
The floating gardens demonstrate this relationship particularly well. Rather than attempting to impose conventional terrestrial agriculture upon the lake environment, cultivators developed methods suited to its ecological conditions.
How a Floating Garden Is Made
The ingenuity of the Raad lies in its construction. Traditional accounts describe cultivators cutting masses of aquatic vegetation and binding them together into long, narrow strips. Mud, weeds and other organic material are added, gradually creating a sufficiently substantial bed for cultivation. The resulting garden can be secured in position with wooden stakes. Because of its construction, it can respond to changing water levels and, in some circumstances, be repositioned.
Government tourism documentation similarly describes the gardens as masses of matted vegetation and soil that are detached from the lakebed, moved to an appropriate location and anchored.
What appears at first glance to be an ordinary vegetable plot is therefore an engineered agricultural surface.
The process reveals an intimate understanding of locally available materials. Aquatic plants that might otherwise simply be treated as weeds become building material. Nutrient-rich organic matter becomes a growing medium. Water surrounding the beds provides the moisture essential for cultivation.
Instead of transporting large quantities of external construction material into the lake, farmers traditionally worked with the resources produced by the lake itself.
Agriculture on Water
The productivity of these gardens is perhaps their most extraordinary characteristic. Tomatoes, cucumbers, melons and other vegetables have traditionally been cultivated on floating plots. Dal Lake also supports lotus cultivation, with the lotus stem—nadru—forming an important part of Kashmiri cuisine and the local economy. Government records have long noted the significance of vegetables, lotus stems and other produce from the lake for Srinagar.
The agricultural landscape changes with the seasons. During the warmer months, cultivated strips become intensely green, intersected by narrow waterways. Farmers travel between plots by small wooden boats rather than walking along conventional farm paths.
This creates a landscape in which agriculture and navigation are inseparable.
The gardens have historically contributed fresh vegetables to Srinagar, linking the ecological life of Dal Lake directly with the food system of the city. The Srinagar Master Plan describes them as a source of livelihood for local communities as well as a source of fresh produce for Srinagar.
From Garden to Floating Market
The unusual geography of cultivation also produced an equally distinctive system of trade.
Produce harvested within the lake could be loaded directly into boats and transported through its waterways. The famous floating vegetable market of Dal Lake grew from this relationship between cultivation, water transport and commerce. Vegetable sellers traditionally gather in boats early in the morning to trade produce before dispersing through the lake and city. Official tourism information records cucumbers, tomatoes, brinjals, water chestnuts, lotus stems and kohlrabi among produce associated with the wetland.
The result is an agricultural supply chain shaped almost entirely by water: the crop grows surrounded by water, the farmer reaches it by boat, the harvest is loaded onto a boat, and produce can be exchanged between traders while they remain afloat.
This is what makes the floating gardens culturally significant. They cannot be understood merely as unusual vegetable beds. They form part of a larger water-based way of life.
Traditional Knowledge and Sustainable Design
Long before expressions such as “nature-based solutions,” “circular economy” and “climate-responsive agriculture” entered contemporary environmental discourse, communities around Dal Lake were practising forms of resourcefulness based on close observation of their environment.
The construction of Raad demonstrates several principles that have renewed relevance today. Locally available biological material is reused. Productive land is created where conventional farmland is limited. Organic matter is incorporated into cultivation, and transportation is integrated into the existing network of waterways.
The Srinagar Master Plan describes the floating gardens as representing a symbiotic relationship between people and natural heritage, noting that local communities traditionally use weeds and plant material from the water system in maintaining the gardens.
Such practices demonstrate that traditional agricultural knowledge is not necessarily primitive or technologically simple. It can embody sophisticated understanding accumulated through generations of experimentation.
More Than Agricultural Land
The floating gardens also form part of the cultural identity of Dal Lake. For generations of cultivators, knowledge about constructing beds, maintaining channels, selecting crops and judging seasonal conditions has been acquired through practice. Skills are embedded not only in tools but in memory: knowing which vegetation can form a stable bed, how much organic matter should be added, when particular vegetables should be planted and how water conditions will affect the crop.
Anthropological scholarship on Dal Lake has consequently treated market gardening as part of the wider cultural ecology of the lake rather than simply an agricultural activity.
The gardens therefore belong to what might be described as living heritage. Their significance resides not merely in preserving an old landscape but in the continuation of knowledge through people who still know how to create and cultivate it.
A Delicate Ecological Balance
Yet the relationship between agriculture and the lake is complicated. Dal Lake today faces serious environmental pressures associated with urbanisation, sewage, nutrient enrichment, sedimentation, changing land use and excessive aquatic vegetation. Scientific research examining long-term changes in the lake has documented deterioration in water quality and increasing nutrient loads. Agricultural activity and the expansion of floating gardens, particularly where fertilisers are used intensively, can themselves contribute nutrients to the lake.
This creates an important distinction between traditional floating agriculture and uncontrolled intensification.
Celebrating the heritage of the Raad should therefore not mean ignoring the ecological limits of Dal Lake. The challenge is to preserve traditional knowledge while ensuring that contemporary cultivation does not accelerate eutrophication, restrict water circulation or contribute additional pollutants.
Conservation must consider the lake as a single interconnected system in which agriculture, settlements, tourism, biodiversity and water quality affect one another.
Preserving a Living Agricultural Heritage
The future of Dal Lake’s floating gardens consequently depends upon both cultural preservation and ecological stewardship.
Traditional techniques should be systematically documented through photographs, oral histories, maps and interviews with farming families. The vocabulary associated with floating agriculture, methods of bed construction, seasonal crop cycles and indigenous tools deserve the same attention often given to Kashmir’s celebrated textile and architectural traditions.
At the same time, sustainable cultivation practices can help protect the lake upon which the tradition itself depends. Scientific institutions, environmental authorities and farming communities can work together to reduce harmful inputs, maintain waterways and identify cultivation practices compatible with long-term lake restoration.
There is also considerable educational value in the gardens. Rather than presenting Dal Lake to visitors solely as a picturesque destination, interpretation programmes could explain its agricultural heritage. A shikara journey through the cultivated areas can become a lesson in ecology, traditional engineering, food systems and human adaptation.
A Garden, a Lake and a Way of Life
The floating gardens of Dal Lake reveal a different dimension of Kashmir’s heritage. Their beauty lies not in monumental architecture or precious materials but in human ingenuity—the ability to observe an environment closely and create a livelihood within its natural rhythms.
A Raad transforms vegetation into land, water into an agricultural landscape and the lake into both farm and transportation network. The vegetables that emerge from these floating plots carry with them generations of accumulated knowledge.
At a time when societies across the world are searching for more sustainable ways to produce food and adapt to changing environments, Dal Lake’s floating gardens offer an important reminder: innovation does not always begin with new technology. Sometimes it survives quietly in traditional practices refined over centuries.
Preserving the Raad therefore means protecting more than an unusual form of agriculture. It means safeguarding the ecological knowledge, livelihoods and cultural memory of communities whose lives have long been intertwined with the waters of Dal Lake.
