A Day of Joy, Healing, and Expression: Summer Camp at Balgran Charitable Home

On 22nd June 2024, JK Arts Foundation organized a one-day Summer Camp at Balgran Charitable Home for Destitute Children, Jammu, engaging 48 children in a full day of creative, movement-based, and expressive activities. Balgran provides care and shelter to children who have faced difficult life circumstances, making emotional well-being and self-expression especially important. The summer camp aimed to create a safe and joyful space where children could explore creativity, experience connection, and simply be children.
The day was thoughtfully designed to offer diverse creative experiences, including painting, stone art, hand painting, and dance. Each activity was facilitated by members of the JKAF team along with dedicated volunteers who supported children throughout the sessions. Rather than focusing on outcomes, facilitators emphasized participation, curiosity, and enjoyment. Art materials were made available to all children, ensuring an inclusive environment where everyone could take part freely.

As the camp unfolded, the Balgran campus transformed into a vibrant hub of color, movement, and laughter. Some children immersed themselves in painting, carefully selecting colors and experimenting with shapes, while others eagerly explored stone and hand painting, discovering new ways to express themselves. The dance sessions brought high energy and excitement, encouraging children to move freely, release stress, and celebrate their bodies through rhythm.
Facilitators observed noticeable shifts in the children’s behavior as the day progressed. Children who were initially quiet began smiling more, interacting with peers, and proudly showing their creations. Many expressed excitement about trying activities they had never experienced before. Volunteers shared that the camp created moments of connection and belonging, helping children feel seen and valued.

Beyond creative skills, the summer camp nurtured emotional expression, resilience, and social bonding. Children learned to share materials, support one another, and appreciate different forms of creativity. These experiences play a vital role in building confidence and positive self-image, especially for children who have faced adversity.
This initiative reflects JK Arts Foundation’s belief that art is not a luxury, but a necessity for holistic development. By bringing arts-based and movement-centered learning into care institutions, JKAF continues to democratize access to creativity and joy.
The day concluded with tired but happy faces, colorful hands, and a sense of accomplishment. At JK Arts Foundation, we believe that when children are given spaces to create, move, and express, they begin to heal, grow, and imagine brighter futures.
